this book is an important book. mikal gilmore tells us the story of his family. of which gary gilmore happened to be a member. the gilmore family had to endure some hard times. mikal tells us about them, about his brother's "career" as a criminal that ended in the killings of innocent people. gary gilmore was sentenced to death, and he personally wanted to be executed. he fought for it even! his family first opposed this decision of his, got some professionals involved, but then stepped back from that legal battle - because they came to respect gary's wish to be executed. what struck me more than anything else in this book is how mikal gilmore manages to revive the emotional journey he went through, how he takes us with him on this journey - with all its ups and downs. very, very moving. i am personally against the death penalty, and this book showed me once again why. bad things can happen in ones lifetime; people can committ awful crimes - but there are always others on this planet who happen to love that person. i highly recommend mikal's "shot in the heart"; he was shot in the heart, and he made me understand his feelings. suggested further reading: norman mailer's "the executioner's song".

I was amazed by this book -- in it, Mikal Gilmore attempts to explain how and why his brother, Gary, became who he was. In the way of all great biography, the book actually raises more questions than it answers and really enlightens. The book is truly engrossing. More than a biography of Gary Gilmore, it is a biography of his family and an exploration of the internal and external forces that shaped that family and the members of it. Mailer's Executioner's Song felt cold by comparison, seeking to answer only certain questions rather than exploring the subject matter fully. Mikal Gilmore is a gifted writer and courageous to delve into his family's history in this manner.

I have given and recommended this book to countless friends, and return to read it when my soul needs nourishment. Gilmore's book is one of those rare artifacts that live and breathe on its own. This is less a book than a living piece of music, one whose beauty is not bright and cheery yet whose light shines fiercely and passionately. Shot in the Heart astonishes me not only for the story it has to tell, but the craft with which the author has captured, and transcended his tale. He has transformed his family history into a gift for every reader.

I have never before bought multiple copies of a book at handed it to friends. Neither have I sat people down and said, "Here, let me read this to you, 'I have dreamed a terrible dream'... ." And never before have I been so profoundly touched by a book.
